Controlled printing, also known as the NINJa Printing System, has been implemented in the the Barnard Library, and will shortly be active in the Brooks, Sulz, 616, and Plimpton labs.

Controlled printing means that Barnard and Columbia students and faculty will have a weekly allotment of pages that they can print from a NINJa PC. Staff and other Library users will have to pay to print from all NINJa computers.

Barnard will now be part of the same controlled printing system introduced on the Columbia campus in September 2003. Pages printed at either Barnard or Columbia will count toward your weekly quota.

The goals of this new system are improved support for printers, contained costs, and less wasted paper. Quotas ensure that the printing resource is shared equitably among all users. There has been an increase in printing of flyers and huge documents in our labs.

We will replace the lab printers with new, faster printers as we install the NINJa workstations. We will ensure that the labs will be checked more frequently.

Determining your page quota is as easy as determining your email quota. Once you've logged into Pine, just type "pages -v" (not including the quotes) at the $ prompt.

There is an online reporting system for problems in the computer labs at http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/at/LabProblem.htm
