Fugu

Fugu is an SFTP application that is provided with MacOS X. You can also download it from the Columbia website: http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/fugu

Althought Fugu is pretty use and Columbia's official recommended SFTP client, it is not the only file transfer program you will ever need. Fugu does not support FTP, so if you are trying to transfer files to a server that does not support secure file transfer, you won't be able to use Fugu. Here are some alternatives to Fugu.

This is a very brief introduction to transferring files. There is a more detailed set of instructions specific to using a program called WinSCP, but the principles are the same. So if you are unfamiliar with SFTP, it would be helpful to read the Transfer Your Files to the Server page even if you plan on using Fugu instead of WinSCP as the principles are the same in both applications.

Start Fugu from the Applications folder in your hard drive.

Type in the appropriate host in the Connect to text field and your username in the Username text field. Click Connect.

Account Host Username Password
BC Student eclipse.barnard.edu Barnard username Barnard password
BC Faculty and Staff bc.barnard.edu Barnard username Barnard password
Columbia cunix.columbia.edu Columbia uni Columbia password

In this example, the user is a Barnard student with the username "tra02".

In the next window you will be asked for your password, type the password corresponding to the account you are using and click Authenticate.

After you have typed in your password, the file transfer window opens, showing the Remote directory on the right panel and your Local computer on the left panel.

On the left hand panel, navigate to the files you would like to transfer to the server. On the right hand panel, navigate to the location where you would like to save your files. If you are publishing a web page, navigate to the public_html folder on the server. To transfer files from one location to another, simply select the files you want to copy and drag them from one panel to the other. You can transfer files from your local computer to the server and vice versa.
