Secure Wireless Setup for Windows Vista

  1. Install your wireless ethernet card according to the manufacturer's directions. It may already be installed.
  2. Go to http://securew2.com (link will open a new window) and download and install the supplicant (SecureW2 EapSuite 1.0.6 for Windows) provided. Restart your computer and then continue with the instructions.
  3. Go to a location on campus where secure wireless networking is available . See here for more information about our project. Click on one of the links below to see a map of wireless coverage on the Barnard and Columbia campuses.
  4. Click Start, select Control Panel, change to Classic View and then double-click on the Network and Sharing Center icon.
  5. Under the left panel titled Tasks, double click on Manage Wireless Networks.
  6. Click Add. There will be a list of 3 ways you can add a network. Click on Manually create a network profile.
  7. When a new window will pop up and under each of the fields, type the following, except that the network name will not be Residential Wireless, but the name of your location, i.e. Barnard Quad, or 6161.
  8. Leave the Security Key/Passphrase field blank and click Next.
  9. Another window will pop up saying you have added the specific wireless. In the window, there are two options, click on Change connection settings.
  10. A new window will pop up titled "(name) Wireless Network Properties". Under the "Choose a network authentication method:" field, select SecureW2 TTLS. Make sure the option "Cache user information for subsequent connections" is selected.
  11. The SecureW2 Profile should come up. Make sure it is set to Default and then click Configure.
  12. On the Connection tab, uncheck "use alternate outer identity".
  13. On the Certificates tab, uncheck "verify server certificate".
  14. On the Authentication tab, make sure "authentication method" says "PAP".
  15. Click OK four times, until you are at the Manually connect to a wireless network prompt from step 9. Click Close and exit all the windows that are open. Do not click on the specific wireless network yet. A little speech bubble should appear at the bottom right hand corner of your screen asking for more information. Click on the speech bubble.
  16. A login prompt will come up.
    • Barnard students: Fill in your Barnard ID and password (same as for eBear and Webmail).
    • Columbia students: Fill in your Cubmail address and password.
    • Leave the Domain field blank. Click OK.
    Click OK.
  17. When you return to your Wireless Network Connection window, you should see the SSID specific to your connection as connected and secure (shown with a symbol of a lock).
  18. You only need to go through these instructions once for the all the difference SSIDs on campus. To switch networks, find the SSID appropriate to your location, and click on it.
