Secure Wireless Setup for Windows Vista
- Install your wireless ethernet card according to the manufacturer's directions.
It may already be installed.
- Download the supplicant, SecureW2*, by clicking HERE.
You need this supplicant for Secure Wireless to function on a PC.
Follow the download instructions, then restart your computer and then continue below. You can also download secureW2 onto a USB from any computer and install it onto your laptop.
- Go to a location on campus where secure wireless networking is available.

- Click Start, select Control Panel, change to Classic
View in the left column of the screen, and then double-click on the Network and Sharing Center icon.
- Under the left panel titled Tasks, double click on Manage Wireless Networks.
- In this window, click Add.
- There will be a list of 3 ways you can add a network. Click on Manually create a network profile.
- When a new window will pop up. Fill in the SSID for your dorm under "Network name,"
"WPA-Enterprise" under "Security Type," and "TKIP" under "Encryption Type."
- Leave the Security Key/Passphrase field blank and click Next.
- Another window will pop up saying you have added the secure wireless netowrk, or the title of whichever secure wireless network is in your dorm.
In the window, there are two options, click on Change connection settings.
- A new window will pop up titled "Wireless Network Properties". Select the "Security" tab. Under the "Choose a network authentication method" field, select
SecureW2 TTLS (which you downloaded earlier). Make sure the option "Cache user information for subsequent connections" is selected.
- Select "Settings" beside the SecureW2 TTLS dropdown menu.
- The SecureW2 Profile should come up. Make sure it is set to Default and then click Configure.
- In the Connection tab, uncheck "Use alternate outer identity".
- In the Certificates tab, uncheck "Verify server certificate".
- In the Authentication tab, make sure "Authentication method" says "PAP".
- In the User Account tab, make sure "Prompt user for credentials" is the only thing checked.
- Click OK four times, until you are at the Manually connect to a wireless network prompt from step 9. Click
Close and exit all the windows that are open. Do not click on the wireless network Barnard Quad yet. A little speech
bubble should appear at the bottom right hand corner of your screen asking for more information. Click on the speech bubble.
- A login prompt will come up.
- Barnard students: Fill in your Barnard ID and password (same as for eBear and Webmail).
- Columbia students: Fill in your Cubmail address and password.
- Leave the Domain field blank. Click OK.
Click OK.
- When you return to your Wireless Network Connection window, you should see the secure wireless SSID (e.g. Barnard Quad) as connected and
secure (shown with a symbol of a lock).
