System Recommendations and What You Should Bring

What to Bring

You should bring all software, hardware, information related to your computer with you to Barnard. This includes manuals, install disks, cables, etc. If something should happen to your computer, you might need to re-install some of your programs and therefore need the original disks and license number for them. It is particularly important to bring the main manual for your computer. If an ACE needs to assist you with your connection, she might need it to figure out how to open a difficult computer case or for a variety of other reasons.

System Recommendations

The following outlines the recommended minimum specifications for connecting your computer to the network and using the latest Internet and other applications. If you are not planning to connect to the network, your computer does not have to comply with these specifications, although it is still recommended for the longevity of your computer's effectiveness.

We will make our best efforts to support systems running Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center Edition, and Macintosh 9.0 and higher. Windows XP Home, Windows ME and Windows 95/98 have presented problems with software installation and with networking on many campus networks, including our own, and we do not recommend them. If you are using a different operating system, you will be able to configure your own network connection, but our staff will not be trained to troubleshoot any problems that may occur in the process.

If you purchase a custom-built computer, be sure to obtain a phone number or email address with which you can reach the manufacturer, as well as an operating system CD. If you need to reformat your computer you will need your operating system CD and the means to reinstall your drivers so that all parts of your computer function properly after the reformat.
