Wireless Setup for Mac OS X
- Go to a location on campus where wireless networking is available. (Please see the Network Info page for information on how to configure secure wireless in the residence halls. Secure Wireless is currently available in Elliott and Sulzberger Halls.) Click on one of the links below to see a map of wireless coverage on the Barnard and Columbia campuses.
- Install your Airport card according to the manufacturer's directions. (It may already be installed.) Disregard the Airport Assistant window if it opens. Do NOT set up your computer to be an Airport Software Base Station.
- Restart your computer and open Apple icon > System Preferences, then Network.
- 10.4 "Tiger": Select Airport from the Configuration drop-down menu. (If necessary, turn your Airport card on by selecting Turn Airport On.) Then choose Barnard College from the Network drop-down menu.
- 10.5 "Leopard": Select Airport from the list on the left menu. (If necessary, turn you Airport card on by selecting Turn Airport On.) Then choose Barnard College from the Network Name dropdown menu.
- Check the indicator in the upper right corner of your screen, shown below. You can also use this icon's dropdown menu in the future to turn the Airport
card on and off and to choose a network.
- If the icon is an outline, Airport is turned off:
- If the arcs of the icon are black, Airport is on and receiving a signal:
- The number of black arcs indicates the strength of your connection. If all of the arcs are gray, you are not receiving an adequate signal. Try moving to a different spot within the wireless access area and check again.
