There are some steps you must take now to ensure that your computer will be as safe as possible from viruses and other malicious programs.
If you have arrived with an infected computer, or if it becomes infected while you are here, you may lose access to the Internet until you clean it up. This can take days, endanger your personal documents, and require you to reformat your hard drive and reinstall your operating system and all your applications from scratch. It is up to you to take the necessary precautions to secure your computer.
In addition to downloading the anti-virus program Symantec as part of the MCS, we recommend that you download an anti-spyware program. Spyware refers to software installed on computers without the user's knowledge that gathers information about the computer or user. Since spyware is different from viruses or worms, you need different programs to detect and remove it.
We currently recommend two free programs to Barnard students running Windows: SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Students should run SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes regularly to keep their computers clean. Please follow the above links or visit our software page to download this software.
