You should bring all software, hardware, information related to your computer with you to Barnard. This includes manuals, install disks, cables, etc. If something should happen to your computer, you might need to re-install some of your programs and therefore need their original disks and license number. It is particularly important to bring the main manual for your computer. If an ACE needs to assist you with your connection, she might need it to figure out how to open a difficult computer case or for a variety of other reasons.
The following outlines the recommended minimum hardware specifications for connecting your computer to the network and using the latest Internet browsers and other applications.
Barnard Student Computing supports both PC and Macintosh computers. We are best equipped to support systems running the follow operating systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional SP3, Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3, and Mac OS X 10.4 and higher. Windows XP Home, Windows ME and Windows 95/98 have presented problems with software installation and with networking on many campus networks, including our own, and we do not recommend them. Additionally, any Windows XP machine running SP2 will need to be upgraded to SP3 before installation or troubleshooting can occur. If you are using an operating system which we do not recommend, you will be able to configure your own network connection, but our staff are not trained to troubleshoot any problems that may occur in the process.

If you need help determining which operating system you are running, please see below:
Navigate to the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the screen. Click on it once and select About This Mac.
In the Start menu, right-click on My Computer then select Properties.
We also recommend that you purchase a USB key drive along with your system.
Many manufacturers include these in optional packages when you purchase your computer.
