On Friday, October 3, 2003, Alice Walker give the keynote address at a two-day reassessment of the life and work of one of Barnard’s most famous alumnae, Zora Neale Hurston. A crowd of 1,300 assembled in LeFrak Gynasium to hear her address.

Lynne Tillman
Barnard's Books, Etc. series kicked off Tuesday, September 30, 2003, with a reading by visiting professor Lynne Tillman. Tillman, author of four novels, including the 1998 New York Times Notable Book No Lease on Life, read two new short stories and two from her most recent story collection, This is Not It.

Mary Gordon
On Wednesday, October 9, 2002, the English Department and the Creative Writing Program hosted Mary Gordon, ’71, for the reading from her upcoming novel, Pearl, to be published this year. Gordon, who is the Millicent C. McIntosh Professor of English at Barnard, is the author of five highly acclaimed novels, a book of short stories, a book of essays, a collection of novellas and a recent memoir about her father.
