Well-Woman is the health promotion program and wellness center at Barnard College. Our mission is to promote the health and wellness of Barnard students through a variety of programming activities. Our philosophical approach to wellness focuses on an integration of body, mind and spirit, which moves us toward a more proactive, healthier existence. We use as our model the Wellness Wheel which includes physical, intellectual, occupational, emotional, social and spiritual, service and cultural dimensions which represent all aspects of human growth. The open center of the wellness wheel reflects the notion that each "spoke" impacts on the others and that we cannot be truly healthy if we neglect any aspect of the wheel. However, it is important to remember that gaining total wellness is a journey and a process that continues throughout life.

Well-Woman provides the following services to students to help them reach their wellness goals:

1. Peer Educators - Barnard undergraduates, who have received extensive training in women’s health issues, self-esteem, body image, sexuality, healthy relationships and stress management. Peer eds provide workshops in residence halls, campus-wide programming and much more.

2. Staff - Well-Woman staff is available to address the needs of the student body from 1-4pm each weekday in the Well-Woman office.

3. Well-Woman Newsletter - We're not currently publishing the Well-Woman newsletter. Miss it? Let us know!

4. Wellness Floors - Well-Woman and the Office of Residential Life and Housing offer Barnard students the option of living in a Wellness Community. These "Wellness Floors" promote dialogue about a range of health topics and involve students in programming that encourages the development of a community dedicated to holistic health.

5. The Wellness Committee - The Wellness Committee was formed in the early 1990's to provide a forum for developing health related programs for the entire Barnard Community -- students, faculty, administrators, and staff.

6. Q & A Column - W-W solicits anonymous questions which are answered by staff and peer eds in the Barnard Bulletin, the weekly newspaper. Questions may be emailed to wellwoman@barnard.edu.

7. Tuesday night W-W clinic - Health Services is open on Tuesday evenings from 5-7 PM for previously scheduled GYN appointments. At 7:30pm in the Well-Woman office, a Well-Woman peer educator will run a weekly GYN ED Session, which is strongly encouraged for all students who will be having their first-ever gyn appointment. To learn more about Ed.Sessions, please click here. After you attend an Ed.Session, you may then schedule your actual exam -- informed, relaxed, and ready! (Please note: regular Tuesday evening GYN Ed Sessions are no longer available this semester. If you'd like an Ed Session, please contact the Well-Woman office (212-854-3063) to schedule an individual appointment.)

Well-Woman also provides individual GYN Ed sessions for students unable to attend the Tuesday session. Please call the office at x43063 to set one up.

8. Campus-wide events - The health education staff works with other departments of the college to bring about programming on wellness that has appeal to the broadest possible constituency. Programming includes stress reduction workshops and classes, safer sex awareness events, body appreciation week, smoking cessation workshops and more.

9. Resources - The Well-Woman Office has a wide variety of resources including health newsletters, books, journals, magazines and brochures. We also maintain a dvd and video library.
