Hot Town, Summer in the City!

Not heading off to the Hamptons this summer? Never fear! New York is FULL of fabulous (and often free!) things to do in the summertime!

  • Check out the city’s many farmers markets—Union Square is great—for delicious fresh food.

  • Move beyond the MET…explore some smaller galleries in Chelsea on Thursday nights for a taste of culture AND hors d’oeuvres.

  • Head to the beach! Take a day trip to one of the outer boroughs to have some safe fun in the sun.

  • Make the most of Central Park! There’s so much to do there in the summer: Opera in the Park, Shakespeare in the Park, roller skating, public swimming pools, the Central Park Film Festival. You could go every day and always do something new.

  • Travel to another country without leaving the Island: try China Town, Little Italy, Little India, or Korea Town.

  • Too hot for you? Use that student ID to get into the MET or MOMA. With so much to see, you could stay in the air-conditioning all day!

  • Volunteer at a community garden and have a little taste of country in the city.

  • Have a treat at the Shake Shack at Madison Square Park and take a mini-vacation in the middle of the day.

  • Make a movie date with a friend, or treat yourself: try them indoors at Film Forum, MOMA, or the Angelica and outdoors at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Summer Film Series, River Flicks (at Pier 54 and Pier 25 on the Hudson), and the Bryant Park Summer Film Series.

  • Attend one of the FIFTY-SEVEN different performances that make up the Lincoln Center Festival.

  • Have your own high seas adventure: try kayaking on the Hudson at 72nd street!

  • Find the outdoor pool nearest you by calling 1-800-201-Park. Get some exercise and cool down for FREE!

  • Finally check www.nymetro.com starting at the end of May for a weekly “Summer Freebies Calendar,” and never run out of things to do!
