The Barnard International Artists Series welcomes the French author Mathias Énard, recipient of France’s most prestigious literary award, the Prix Goncourt, for his latest book, Compass. Set in Vienna, Compass explores the interrelations between the Middle Eastern and Western cultures. It’s a novel both timely in its concerns and richly complex in its literary appetites and approach. His previous two novels—Zone, written in a single sentence over 500 pages, and Street of Thieves—were both highly acclaimed. Énard is also a translator from Persian and Arabic. Please join us for this rare opportunity to hear the author read from his work as well as discuss translation and the wider themes of his novels.
