The German literary prize Geschwister Scholl, which every year recognizes a book that "shows intellectual independence," has been awarded to The Return: Fathers, Sons, and the Land in Between, the lauded memoir of Hisham Matar, Associate Professor of Professional Practice in English.

The official citation is as follows:

Hisham Matar is awarded the 38th Geschwister-Scholl-Preis.
The jury's reasoning is that The Return is a book about the overwhelming force of resistance of the human mind and about the virtues of the memory that wants to live up to this experience: perseverance, care and caution. Thus Hisham Matar's work in the widest sense recalls the legacy of the siblings Scholl and is suited to promote freedom, moral, intellectual courage and the importance and responsibility of human conscience.
