Phishing Scams

Phishing Alert: Job posting scam targets college students

Scam employers sometimes target students by fraudulently posting, sometimes under a real company name, or one very similar to a real company.

If you see a position in NACElink and/or receive an email from an employer that you believe to be a scam, please notify the Barnard Career Development immediately.  Phishing scams attempt to trick students into providing sensitive personal information (i.e., social security numbers and credit card/banking details) or into sending money or other items of value.  These scams come in many forms and disguises, including:

  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Online schools and training centers
  • Fraudulent sellers
  • Emails about being a contest winner
  • Disguised online portals or web-mail services
  • False Users of Social Networking Sites

If you have any concerns about a potential employer, job or internship, please contact Barnard Career Development at 212-854-2033.  Your odds of becoming a victim are greatly reduced with knowledge, awareness and detection.
