Dear Barnard Faculty and Staff,

Welcome to the start of the summer semester. We want to provide you with updates of the construction work you can expect in Barnard Hall this summer.

For now, you will begin to see extensive work in the interior of Barnard Hall and an increase in the number and frequency of deliveries along Claremont Avenue including periodic sidewalk closures. Below is a summary of anticipated construction activities and logistics.

ELEVATORS & CORRIDORS

  • Lower level corridor access between Milstein and the Quad will be closed for about a week for demolition and scaffolding erection, beginning Thursday, May 25 and ending in early June. Dust mitigation strategies will be in place to minimize impacts outside of the area of work. There will be noticeable noise and vibrations on the lower levels of the building during this time, and signage will be posted to identify alternate routes. Scaffolding will remain in the lower level corridor for the majority of the summer, and any additional disruptions to tunnel access will be coordinated around summer programming and activities.
  • The north elevator will be offline for upgrades for 8-10 weeks. The exact start date has not been confirmed, but tentatively we expect this work to stretch from mid-July to late-September.
  • The south elevator will remain available for use by the building, but during contractor hours (before 4 p.m.) this elevator will be shared between building occupants and workers. We recommend you use the north elevator until it goes off-line, in particular, to access the second floor.

FIRST FLOOR & LOWER LEVEL

  • More noticeable work is ongoing on the first floor and lower levels of the building, but the exact start date of work in the lobby hasn’t been determined. We will keep you updated as that timeline is finalized as it will have greater impacts on access through the first floor.
  • There may be limited locations where Wi-Fi is not operational in the basement and first floor corridors of Barnard Hall.

SECOND, THIRD & FOURTH FLOORS & ROOF

  • Work has begun on the upper floors of the building to install new mechanical shafts and ductwork on the south side of the building. This work will involve temporary walls and floor protection in some hallways, noticeable noise and vibration, and increased contractor presence for a 5-6 week duration on each floor. Currently, visitors on the third and fourth floors are encountering the most disruptive activities; second floor visitors should expect more direct impacts to begin in early June.

RESTROOMS

  • The women’s and gender-neutral restrooms on the first floor of Barnard Hall are closed and will remain that way for the summer. The men’s restroom on the first floor (north side) has been designated a gender neutral restroom.
  • The gender neutral bathroom on the fourth floor will be offline for contractor use for the majority of the summer.
