Dear Barnard Community,

We hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. As we embark on the Fall 2023 semester, we extend our warmest welcome to all students, staff, and faculty members. Your presence and dedication continue to shape our vibrant campus community, and we are excited to reconnect and learn together once again.

Unfortunately, we are seeing an increase in COVID-19 rates both on campus and in the surrounding area. We encourage you to take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others. Below are some important updates regarding our approach to COVID-19 safety measures:

COVID-19 Positive Test Reporting:

Community members should report positive tests to the Public Health Response Team via this form. The College no longer uses the CoVerified application, effective August 1. After reporting a positive test, you will receive information about your isolation/recovery-in-place (including dates, ending isolation, etc.). This reporting also helps us continue to collect data and monitor rates on campus.

Exposed to Someone who has COVID-19:

If you were exposed or think you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19,  regardless of your vaccination status or if you have had a previous infection, here are the basic steps, as per CDC guidance, that you should take:

  1. Wear a mask as soon as you find out you were exposed, and continue wearing one for 10 days.
  2. Be watchful for any symptoms of COVID-19.
  3. If you develop symptoms, isolate immediately, get tested, and stay home until you know the results.
  4. Day 6 → Get tested, even if you do not have symptoms.

Masking and Safety Measures:

Our campus remains "masking friendly," and we respect everyone’s choice about whether or not to mask. Masks continue to be required in Student Health Services (PCHS, Furman, CARDS, and the Wellness Spot). By wearing masks, we contribute to the well-being of our entire community.

Changes in Testing and Health Services:

Please note that we no longer maintain a COVID-19 testing program on campus. If you are feeling unwell, we urge you to get tested, stay home until you have a result and wear a mask. Students can continue to be tested at PCHS; faculty and staff can seek testing at local resources within the city.

COVID-19 Vaccination:

Vaccination continues to be strongly recommended but optional. We know although vaccination doesn’t prevent becoming infected with COVID-19, it is the safest strategy for avoiding hospitalizations, long-term health outcomes, and death.

Public Health Compact:

We are an interconnected community and all contribute to the health of our campus. Each community member is expected to complete and sign the Barnard Community Compact and adhere to all health-related protocols. To complete the compact, click here. *Anyone who completes this by September 15 by 5 p.m. will be entered to win a GrubHub gift card.

As we move forward, our collective effort is essential in ensuring a healthy and safe semester. If you are unsure about what to do when you are sick or have been exposed, please email phrt@barnard.edu for additional guidance and resources.

Here's to a successful semester filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences. Stay well, stay safe, and stay connected.

Take very good care and warm regards,

April Autry PA-C, MPH (she/her)
